SOUNDSEEING VI – Sounds to See

Extraordinary sounds at cultural venues across Münsterland

that’s what distinguishes »SOUNDSEEING« as a unique sound art series. Top-class sound art can be seen and heard in authentic places throughout Münsterland – that is the nationally unique concept of SOUNDSEEING for the region. In 2016, the cooperation that has evolved over the years extended from Ahlen to Heek and from Rheine to Bocholt. SOUNDSEEING crosslinks the region’s cultural venues with the aim of opening ears and eyes to something new. In order to make this happen at a young age, SOUNDSEEING also offers workshops for children and teenagers and specifically seeks dialogue with a young audience. Sounds to see for everyone, to see and hear the special in the ordinary – our acoustic world is richer and more inspiring than we think!

Concerts

1000 BEATS by Belgian Pieterjan Ginckels, the dialogue between clarinet and barrel organ by Michael Riessler and Pierre Charial – SOUNDSEEING VI excelled with a concert programme that was unheard of and worth listening to. The sound artists of »Atonor« developed their very own blend of performance, theatre and rhythm in their sound laboratory. Duo »Moving Sounds«, featuring clarinetist Tara Bouman and world-renowned trumpeter Markus Stockhausen, ventured into new acoustic worlds with spherical (over)tones. Improvisation and experiment, wit and zest, acoustic colours ranging from comical to mystical – numerous avant-garde and jazz enthusiasts were ecstatic, whether at Burg Vischering or cuba-cultur!

Workshops

Participation, or to put it more simply, joining in, has been an essential part of SOUNDSEEING from the very beginning. In the past years, fascinating projects such as »30 years of Travelon Gamelon«, a bicycle workshop and orchestra by American composer and sound artist Richard Lermans, or »Singende Insektenroboter« with Ralf Schreiber were among them. In 2016, sound builder Schreiber, very well liked in the region for his annual electronics workshops, and Tina Tonagel have led several workshops across Münsterland in cooperation with local schools. Working together with children and teenagers, they soldered electronic sound devices and equipped a sound tree with solar objects. Sonic excitement guaranteed – no previous electronic knowledge required …
And outside Zeche Ahlen and at DA Klostern Gravenhorst in Hörstel composer and instrument maker Peter Ausländer worked with school children to create an ear-opening sound parcours!

Workshops:
Solarbetriebene Klangmodule | Ralf Schreiber and Tina Tonagel
»Klangbaum im Amtsgarten« | Ralf Schreiber
Workshops with Peter Ausländer: »HÖRLICHT« | »HÖRSTELELEPHONIE« | »HALLWEGEGEHÖRGÄNGE«
